Coaching is a process of accurate and thought-provoking questioning by the coach, prompting the client to find their own answers and to work themselves through to a state of the desired transition.
This process requires intention and commitment by the coachee to transition into a place of more meaningful being; to discover (and grow into) their best version of themselves. The coach holds the process, utilising insight and experience to ensure that an optimal path is navigated. It’s the co-working between coach and coachee; a joint desire to move towards the coachee’s goals. It is about engaging, integrating and then emerging into a desired new way of being.
Counselling takes place when the counsellor and client focus on and seek to resolve matters arising which may have resulted in a variety of emotions causing some anxiety or blockage.
From a life stage perspective, clients may feel that they are struggling to manage e.g. a bad work experience, disillusionment in their abilities, regretting a life not fulfilled or possibly feeling anxious about what is yet to come.
The counsellor creates a safe space for clients to relay their concerns and assist them in unearthing these core challenges. A good counsellor also offers suggestions, based on their knowledge of their client and their professional understanding of psychological principles
Guidance is used to offer advice, counsel or to recommend direction and approaches as requested by the client. This approach is particularly useful and certainly more appropriate when navigating the myriad of career choices, post school E.g. what subjects are required for acceptance to various degrees, courses that might suit you best, where you could find more information about a special interest etc.
Facilitating is about guiding a group discussion, ensuring the full inclusivity of the group, where all have the right to contribute and are engaged in the process.
It is a time of active listening, providing clear instructions, managing time and ensuring the comfort of the team. It also includes making sure that the learnings are effective and relevant and steering the conversations in need.
